Apple green is the color of New York’s new taxis

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and David S. Yassky, commissioner of the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission, revealed the official color of city’s new Boro Taxis today – apple green.

“We think ‘apple green’ is attractive and distinctive,” Bloomberg said at a news conference at City Hall, the New York Times reported. “It’s easy on the eyes and easy to pick out from a distance in traffic.”

The Boro Taxis are cars that New Yorkers in the outer boroughs of Manhattan will be allowed to legally hail on the street. Currently, residents of the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn who want to ride into Manhattan have to call for radio-dispatched car service, wave down a loose yellow cab on its way back to Manhattan or illegally hail an unlicensed taxi on the street. More than 100,000 illegal hails take place each day, according to the Taxi and Limousine Commission, Bloomberg News reported.

The Boro Taxis will have meters, roof lights, global positioning-system locators and accept credit-card payments, Bloomberg News reported.

According to the New York Times:

The city will start accepting applications on May 29 for the first 6,000 licenses; it will offer 12,000 additional licenses in the following two years.

Not all New Yorkers think the new color evokes apples, the New York Times reported. Thomas Boskett, a professor at Parsons The New School for Design and an expert in color theory, told the New York Times that he considers the color “a warm wasabi.”
He added: “I love the robustness. It’s actually nice that they’re picking a color that seems kind of intense.”
