Andy Murray wins US Open final, defeats Novak Djokovic in five sets

Andy Murray won the US Open men’s singles final today, capturing his first Grand Slam victory.

It took the perennial runner-up nearly five hours to defeat defending champion Novak Djokovic in five sets 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, Bloomberg reported.

Sky News reported that Murray has become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win a Grand Slam title.

After winning the match, Murray sank to his knees and covered his face with his hands, the Associated Press reported.

He look “relieved and sore, rather than ecstatic” after the grueling match, The Age newspaper noted. 

No wonder. At four hours and 54 minutes, it was the equal-longest US Open final in history, Sky News said.

The final was meant to be played on Sunday but was delayed due to rain.

Fellow Scotsman Sir Sean Connery was among the crowd of spectators at Flushing Meadows.

The former James Bond actor was seen pumping his fist whenever Murray clinched a point.
