Abu Hamza to appear in New York court following extradition
Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza on April 16, 2004 in London. The European Court of Human Rights approved Hamza’s extradition from the UK to the US on April 10, 2012, along with four other suspected terrorists, setting a precedent for extradition between the countries.
Abu Hamza al-Masri is due to appear in a New York court on terrorism charges following his extradition from the UK to the US.
The radical Muslim cleric is one of five men extradited to the US hours after a British High Court on Friday rejected their final appeals, the BBC said. He has reportedly arrived at an airport in New York state.
Abu Hamza faces 11 charges in the US including hostage taking and trying to set up an Al Qaeda-style training camp.
On Friday, judges in the UK ruled that Abu Hamza could be extradited to the United States, along with Babar Ahmad, Talha Ahsan, Abdel Abdul Bary and Khaled Al Fawaaz.
The court said Abu Hamza failed to show "new and compelling" reasons not to extradite him.
The UK's Press Association said Abu Hamza is expected to face a judge in New York within 24 hours of his arrival.
He is likely to be held in an area for high-profile prisoners at the Metropolitan Correction Center in Manhattan, the BBC said.
Two of the other men extradited to the US, Babar Ahmad and Tahla Ahsan, will appear before a judge in Connecticut in connection with the alleged running of a pro-jihad website, according to the BBC.
