Two British men sentenced for bizarre Oompa Loompa attack

Two British men were sentenced on Wednesday for starting a street brawl and attacking two passers-by while dressed as Oompa Loompas.

The bizarre assault took place in the early hours of December 27, 2012 in the city of Norwich.

Police said the two men, who had white overalls, green wigs and orange skin, started the fight that left a 28-year-old man with cuts and bruises.

Louis Gelinas was sentenced to 240 hours of community work and Matthew Wright was sentenced to 10 months in a young offenders' institute.

Gelinas and Wright, both 20, pleaded guilty to "affray" — or disturbing the peace — at an earlier hearing.

Police said they were unsure why the men were dressed like tiny chocolate workers when they started the fight.

But the irony of their chosen character wasn't lost on prosecutor Stephen Spence. 

He told the court that the two men were dressed as "peaceable characters" who "Willy Wonka employs in his factory to keep them away from trouble."

"Far from keeping out of trouble," he added, "these men got into what was initially a verbal altercation, were abusive, calling one of the men 'gay', and ended up pushing the men resulting in facial injuries to one of them."

Oompa Loompas were first created by author Roald Dahl and appeared in the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory".

According to the Daily Mail, it's not the first time the fictional factory workers had a brush with the law.

In 2009, a man dressed as an Oompa Loompa got into a brawl during a costume party in Devon, UK.
