Suspect arraigned in deadly Pennsylvania town hall shooting (VIDEO)

Around 7:30 p.m. alleged gunman Rockne Newell, 59, entered the Ross Township building in Saylorsburg, Pa., and opened fire, killing three people and injuring several others, according to police.

Two civilians then subdued Newell, whose town property had been condemned on Thursday.

"They were certainly courageous — they saved lives," said State Police Capt. Edward Hoke at a press conference.

Newell was arraigned on charges of criminal homicide Tuesday morning.

Authorities also released the names Tuesday of two of the three people killed — James V. LaGuardia, 64, David Fleetwood, 62, and Gerard J. Kozi, 53.

A local reporter at the scene said Newell had begun firing from outside the building. He then entered and seemingly began shooting again at random. He left the building and came back with a handgun, and that's when a meeting official and another person were able to subdue him.

"Bernie Kozen was there tending to the man and [Newell] didn't see them," according to the first-person account of Pocono Record reporter Chris Reber. "Bernie bear-hugged him and took him down. He shot [the shooter] with his own gun."

Newell was taken to a hospital and later released into police custody.
