Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, taken to hospital for surgery

The husband of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, has been admitted to hospital Thursday due to abdominal problems.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 91, will undergo an exploratory operation for "abdominal investigations," a Buckingham Palace statement said.

He was taken to a London clinic after attending a garden party hosted by his wife.

Prince Philip is expected to remain there for several weeks.

He missed an event on Monday evening, reportedly feeling under the weather.

He already spent a week in hospital last summer for a bladder infection.

Philip is the son of the exiled Prince Andrew of Greece and married Princess Elizabeth in 1947.
