The police have sealed off the popular tourist area and evacuated people from several houses.
The blast was reportedly heard up to a mile away, while buildings within a hundred yards had their windows shattered.
Rescue workers are still searching for people feared trapped in the rubble, though they are forced to proceed cautiously for fear of gas leaks.
