NYC to resume search for 9/11 victims’ remains

New York City will on Monday again start sifting though World Trade Center debris to find victims' remains from the Sept. 11 attacks.

The Chief Medical Examiner on Friday informed concerned families of the 10-week sifting plan, the first since 2010.

"We will continue DNA testing until all recovered remains that can be matched with a victim are identified," Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said in a memo to Mayor Bloomberg on Friday.

About 60 dump truck loads of debris collected in recent years will be searched. That's about 590 cubic yards. Some debris is from the World Financial Center, and some is from West Street and Liberty Street.

So far the Examiner's office has identified 1,634 out of 2,752 people who were killed in the attacks, which means more than 1,000 families have yet to find remains of their loved ones.
