Mohammed Sohel Rana, owner of collapsed Bangladesh building, arrested trying to flee (PHOTOS)

Mohammed Sohel Rana, the owner of the Bangladesh building that collapsed last week and left hundreds dead, has been arrested.

The collapse of the building — a plaza of factories that produced low cost garments for international retailers called Rana Plaza — has left 377 people dead, with the death toll expected to rise. 

Rana was apprehended in the border town of Benapole by the elite Rapid Action Battalion, who had been hunting for the fugitive businessman for the past four days. 

He was brought back to Dhaka by helicopter, where he is facing negligence charges. 

Six people have been arrested in connection to the building's collapse, including three factory owners. Three of the plaza's eight storeys were reportedly build illegally. 

Rescue workers are racing to recover survivors of the collapse as the window to find those alive is closing rapidly. 

"The chances of finding people alive are dimming, so we have to step up our rescue operation to save any valuable life we can," Major General Chowdhury Hassan Sohrawardi, coordinator of the operation at the site, told Reuters. 

Around 2,500 people have been rescued from the site so far.
