Earthquake with 5.2 magnitude shakes Canada near capital Ottawa

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook parts of eastern Canada, including the capital Ottawa Friday morning.

The tremor was followed by a 4.2 magnitude aftershock 10 minutes later.

Shawville, Que. was the epicenter of the quake – about an hour by car from the capital.

The tremor and the aftershock were felt as far as Toronto, Montreal and parts of Vermont.

There were no reports of injuries or damages.

The area is a small seismic zone with small tremors occuring hundreds of times each year but they are rarely felt.

The last earthquake of this size in the region was three years ago.
