Police killed four dogs and captured a fifth suspected of mauling a 14-year-old girl in Manchester, England to death, while she was eating a meat pie at a neighbor’s house.
Emergency crews found the body of Jade Anderson with bite marks consistent with a dog attack inside the home, the Manchester Guardian reported.
“I understand this is an extremely distressing incident for all concerned, including the community, and we will work hard to establish the full circumstances that led to this tragedy,” police Superintendent Mark Kenny told the newspaper.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. as Jade visited friends in the Greater Manchester area, BBC reported.
Police said they weren't sure how well the girl knew the dogs.
She was described by those who knew her as unassuming yet lively.
“We hoped she had a great future ahead of her and she was making excellent progress,” Jan Garretts, the principal at Jade’s school, told BBC.
Police destroyed the dogs, believed to be two bull mastiffs and two Staffordshire bull terriers. There were no previous complaints or reports of the dogs running loose, police told media.
Friends told a TV station that the dogs attacked as Jade ate, Sky News said.
“She had a pie in her hand and has gone to bite it, she moved the pie and the dogs gone for her throat and then they have all gone for her,” the young woman told Sky.
A post-mortem is scheduled to determine more details.
