American pro wrestler Darren Young came out to a cameraman for the TMZ celebrity news site on Thursday, saying: "Look at me, I'm a WWE [World Wrestling Entertainment] Superstar and to be honest with you … I'll tell you right now that I'm gay."
"And I'm happy, very happy." Young continued, according to the Sports News Network, going on to ask his questioner: "Does it matter to you? Does it change what you think about me?"
Twenty-nine-year-old Young, real name Fred Rosser, was answering a question about whether or not he thought alternative lifestyles would be accepted for professional wrestlers, according to CBS.
His response makes him the first active WWE wrestler to publicly come out as gay, said the Sports News Network, and puts him among a number of newly-revealed openly gay US athletes.
The wrestling corporation has issued a statement in support, writing, "WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar," reported CBS.
Some 14 millions Americans watch WWE every week, according to the Guardian.
"I'm hoping to be able to make a difference, you know," The Guardian quoted Young as telling TMZ. "It's very important to me that people understand that somebody's sexual preference shouldn't really matter."
