Colbert welcomes President Clinton ‘to the future’ with @PrezBillyJeff Twitter

Stephen Colbert welcomed Bill Clinton "to the future" by opening up a Twitter account for the former president with the handle @PrezBillyJeff.

During his first appearance on The Colbert Report Monday night, Clinton revealed that he didn't know if he had enough friends to open up his own account.

"I think I’m so, sort of, insecure. Like … what if you tweet and nobody tweets back?" Clinton asked. "There’s nothing worse than a friendless tweeter, right?"

Clinton said he didn't object to the name of his new handle since, as Colbert said, "President Clinton was taken, William Jefferson Clinton was taken, but Prez Billy Jeff was available."

Despite having only a single tweet, @PrezBillyJeff already has more than 60,000 followers.

The interview tool place during the sixth annual Clinton Global Initiative University meeting at Washington University in St. Louis.

Colbert asked Clinton during the sit-down – dubbed the "Colbert Galactic Initiative" – why he was focusing his post-presidential retirement on global issues instead of playing golf.

"It’s totally selfish," Clinton said. "I do it because I’m good at it and I’m not good enough to play golf on the senior tour and I don’t play my saxophone as much as I used to so I don’t like to do it in public."

"And it makes me happy," he added. "I do it because I think that for the life I’ve been given by the American people, I’d be kind of a slug if I didn’t do it."
