Britons battle the heat as the sun blazes down

Wednesday was the hottest day of the year for London, with a temperature of 32.2 degrees Celsius (or in Fahrenheit terms, a paltry seeming 89.9 degrees).

However, the Met Office has raised the heat wave warning to "level three" for many parts of England, including the capital.

The furor might be warranted because this is the United Kingdom's first heat wave since 2006, and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said, "We are not ready for this."

Clegg said Thursday, "The problem we face as a country is these things are unpredictable. We have a whole system, the whole way we work, our offices, buses everything, isn't actually designed for these sudden spikes in temperature."

"In countries that are used to hot temperatures they organize themselves differently, or indeed very cold winters."
