Best restaurant in the world: El Celler de Can Roca in Spain

Noma is no longer the world's best restaurant according to Restaurant magazine in the UK.

El Celler de Can Roca topped the magazine's list that includes 50 of the best restaurants around the world according to food critics, chefs and foodies.

El Celler is run by three brothers in Girona, Spain, just north of Barcelona since 1986.

It serves upscale and inventive Catalan food and has been on the list for eight years climbing its way to the top.

It boasts three Michelin stars.

The restaurant trailed Copenhagen's Noma for two years in second place before overtaking it this year.

Noma had held the top ranking for three years but a food poisoning incident saw 63 diners fall ill in February and the restaurant slapped with an official warning.

The list has been published since 2002 and is based on over 900 votes.

Bloomberg explained how the ranking works:

The rankings are compiled by aggregating the votes of 26 regional panels, consisting of a chairman or chairwoman and 35 other people. (I head the U.K. and Ireland panel.) Each member picks seven restaurants, including at least three from outside his or her region, for a total of 936 votes worldwide.

The top five spots on the 2013 list went to: El Celler de Can Roca. Denmark’s Norma, Italy’s Osteria Francescana, Spain's Mugaritz and New York's Eleven Madison Park.
