GlobalPost

Rescue workers searching through piles of rubble after an earthquake — an all-too familiar sight.

On Wednesday, an eight-story factory building collapsed in Bangladesh, claiming nearly 100 lives. Many remain trapped in the rubble.

Scores of people have been killed or wounded in sudden building collapses over the past decade. Often, the structures in question were illegally constructed, do not conform to building codes, or have been poorly maintained.

And it's the inhabitants who pay the price.
