A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed just blocks from President Barack Obama's home in Chicago.

In the latest gun violence to plague the Midwest's largest city, Cornelius German was fatally shot in the backyard of a house in the Bronzeville neighborhood about four blocks from the Obama home.

Police told WMAQ that German was a gang member but aren't sure why he was shot.

He was shot in the back and found lying unresponsive at about 9:40 p.m. last night.

His mother, worried that her son had not met her at a nearby corner, followed police cars and discovered his body, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

“I had this sinking gut feeling something wasn’t right,” Timika Rutledge, 42, told the newspaper. “I saw a police officer. He said a little kid got shot. Somehow, I knew it was my baby. I went back there. I saw my baby on the ground in the grass. I saw his gym shoes and his jacket.”

No one was in custody as of this afternoon.

At least seven other people were injured in shootings overnight in Chicago.
