First Same-Sex Married Couple Approved for Green Card

The Takeaway

Just days after the Supreme Court delivered a legal milestone in the form of a ruling against the Defense of Marriage Act,  Traian Popov and Julian Marsh celebrated a personal milestone.
Friday was Julian’s 55th birthday, and in the middle of a celebratory dinner, Traian got an email with some big news: He was approved for a green card petition, which now allows the couple to officially apply for a green card.
That decision made Traian and Julian the first same-sex married couple to be approved to apply for a permanent resident visa.
And though they still have paperwork to go through and a procedural process to follow, Julian and Traian said they’re just glad to be subject to the same rules and regulations as straight couples in America.
Traian and Julian join The Takeaway to discuss the news and what it means for gay and immigrant rights.
