A Hemisphere is half a sphere. The spherical shaped earth can be divided into hemispheres. It’s divided by the Equator, the great circle of latitude that’s lies halfway between the North and South Pole. And by the Prime Meridian and its twin line of longitude at 180 degrees.
These lines divide the planet into hemispheres -north, south, east, and west.
The question today is what is the only continent in all four hemispheres?
Choose from among: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.
By the way, both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans are in all four hemispheres. And the islands of Kiribati lie in all four hemispheres — but remember Kiribati is not a continent.
Now, feel free to use the left hemisphere or the right hemisphere of your brain to solve this one.
OK time’s up on our Geo Quiz. We wanted to know which continent is in all 4 hemispheres.
Africa extends both east and west of the Prime Meridian or zero degrees longitude. And it lies north and south of the Equator.
So the continent of Africa is our best answer – send us your nominations if you think otherwise. theworld@pri.org
