For today’s Geo Quiz — you have to use your ears.

A song is the clue for our quiz today. We want to know the country where you might hear this kind of singing.

It sounds a little like a Russian village chorus or the Bulgarian Women’s Choir. But it’s not.

This song is sung in Seto, a language spoken by an estimated 5,000 thousand people. It belongs to what linguists call the Balto-Finnic group of the Finno-Ugric languages. The Seto ethnic minority are among the last remaining traditional folk cultures in Europe.

Songs like this one have been passed down from generation to generation. These are traditional melodies though Seto women like to improvise. They’ve been known to add contemporary references to things like taxes, the new economy, and the Internet.

So add up the clues and try to come up with the name of the country where you might hear this song…

Time to give out the answer to our musical Geo Quiz today. If you guessed Estonia …Bingo! You got it right. We’d also accept Russia.

The song we heard earlier comes from the Seto ethnic minority group in southeast Estonia along the border with Russia.
