We stay in Africa — for today’s Geo Quiz. We’re looking for the name of a small African country. It’s located to the east of Lake Kivu. Lake KivuLake Kivu The country to the lake’s west is the much larger Democratic Republic of Congo. The border between the two runs right through the lake. The country we’ve set our sights on is often in the news. Yesterday, our program included two stories about this place. One involved allegations that the country’s government had sent its troops into Congo to support a rebel army there. The other story was about this country deciding to teach ENGLISH in its schools — rather than French. So — what nation are we talking about? For our quiz today, we were looking for a small African country on the shores of Lake Kivu. The answer is Rwanda. A few years back, we ran a story about an unusual partnership between Macy’s department store and some Rwandan basket weavers. Many of the weavers were survivors of the 1994 genocide. The project has gone from selling about 1,000 baskets to 50,000 baskets a year. Reporter Judy Goldberg has this update:
