Michigan Radio is “Your NPR News Station” and the state’s most listened-to public radio service. We simulcast programming on three FM transmitters…WUOM 91.7 FM in Southeast Michigan, WFUM 91.1 FM in Flint, and WVGR 104.1 FM in West Michigan, with a broadcast signal that reaches 80% of Michigan’s population. Our stations serve approximately 500,000 listeners each week across the southern half of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and a worldwide audience through our online audio stream. Michigan Radio also provides an in-depth online news service that provides updated news stories throughout the day to over 100,000 unique users per month at michiganradio.org.
Michigan Radio is dedicated to covering the news stories that affect our lives as citizens of Michigan, and helping our listeners better understand their state, nation and world. While many media outlets have cut back on their reporting, Michigan Radio has expanded its service and coverage of issues affecting the state. Michigan Radio has an awarding-winning team of reporters, and news bureaus located in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Jackson and Grand Rapids.In addition to carrying a full range of programming from NPR, American Public Media, and the BBC, we also produce local features like The Environment Report, Michigan Watch investigative reports, Jack Lessenberry’s Essays, hourly newscasts, feature reports and in-depth special news series and documentaries.
In the past year, the Michigan Radio news team has been recognized with more than 45 awards from numerous organizations including the award for General Excellence from the Michigan Associated Press, and Station of the Year Award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. Michigan Radio has also received national awards from the Public Radio News Directors, Inc., Radio Television Digital News Association, UNITY: Journalists of Color, and the Association for Women in Communications.
Licensed to the University of Michigan, Michigan Radio broadcasts from studios located in Ann Arbor. Our flagship station, WUOM, first began broadcasting on the newly-designated FM band in 1948, and WVGR and WFUM followed in 1961 and 1985, respectively.
