Michael Standaert has lived and worked in China since 2007, first in Beijing, and now from Shenzhen as a freelance correspondent for Bloomberg BNA, primarily covering legal and regulatory news related to the environment, trade, intellectual property, infrastructure and labor. Prior to that he spent a few years working as a writer for a private family foundation in Big Sur, California, as well as writing and freelancing from the U.S. Midwest and from Brussels, Belgium where he moved after completing an MA in journalism at Cardiff University in Wales in 2001. Standaert studied English literature at the University of Iowa and has published one novel (The Adventures of the Pisco Kid, 2007 Arriviste Press) and one work of nonfiction (Skipping Towards Armageddon, 2005 Soft Skull).
