Kimberly Johnson reports on U.S. Marine Corps combat operations in Helmand Province in Southern Afghanistan where, alongside NATO forces, they battle Taliban guerilla fighters and attempting to secure the region before August’s presidential election. Johnson began covering military issues in 2005, when she first embedded with U.S. Marines in Anbar Province for several months as they battled for terrain against Iraqi and al-Qaeda insurgents. The following year, she covered troops in Iraq more than six months, reporting, writing and blogging for USA Today’s foreign desk. She has contributed to US News & World Report, the Washington Post, National Geographic News, Newsweek.com, Agence France-Presse, National Public Radio, the Financial Times of London and others. Johnson grew up in Bennettsville, SC, and received her bachelor’s degree in print journalism from the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
