Naysan Rafati, a senior Iran analyst with the International Crisis Group, joined The World’s Carol Hills to discuss a recent agreement between Iran and the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency that will allow for the reset of monitoring devices at Iranian nuclear sites.
Iranians were celebrating Monday after their leaders reached a deal to temporarily relax some of the crippling sanctions facing the country in exchange for restrictions on their nuclear program. It’s a temporary deal that expires in six months if there’s no further progress.
There were positive signs heading into Iran’s latest talks with the United States and other nations about its nuclear enrichment program. It seems to be willing to make some compromises in an effort to resolve what has been a years-long diplomatic stand-off. But will it be enough, in the right places, to actually forge a deal. Probably not this time, but maybe sooner, rather than later.
Iran’s controversial nuclear plans continue to raise tensions. Israeli, European, and American leaders have slightly different policies regarding the threat of an armed Iran. The situation could come to a head this weekend when negotiations with Iran resume.
