More than 200 years after throwing off slavery and founding the world’s first free, black republic, Haitians are still struggling with one foundational element of their identity: vodou. Haiti owes its independence, and much of its arts and culture, to this Afro-Caribbean religion, but the people who practice it say their faith is being stigmatized.
