Turkey, NATO’s southern flank, shares a border with ISIS extremists. For years, that border has been easy to cross, allowing foreign fighters to stream into Syria. Now, with ISIS on the rampage, Turkey is trying to shut down the border, but it may be too late.
The BBC’s Ian Pannell reports on the challenges facing a newly arrived US troops in Afghanistan. Pannell went on patrol with a unit of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division, part of the first installment of additional American forces being deployed to Afghanistan to counter rising violence by the Taliban.
The United States is looking at how it can support the Afghan government in securing areas against the Taliban. One plan on the table is to provide weapons to villagers. A similar strategy was successfully implemented in Iraq…. so can it work in Afghanistan? The BBC’s Ian Pannell reports.
