The Justice Department is deciding whether to grant a legal request to free a detainee by the name of Tariq Ba Odah. The Yemeni national has been on hunger strike since 2007 and currently weighs just 74 pounds.

Images of Cuba are usually beautiful: bright pastel colors, warm tropical weather and the bright blue hue of the ocean. But prisoners at Guantanamo can’t see any of that, even though it’s right outside. Photographer Debi Cornwall went to the prison to capture those contradictions on film.

When he joined President Obama’s cabinet, Attorney General Eric Holder was expected to oversee the shutdown of the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. That never happened, but Holder succeeded in shifting focus back to civilian courts — but also aggressively onto leakers.

Even before the first detainee arrived at the US base in Guantanamo, Cuba, Miami Herald reporter Carol Rosenberg was on the story. The courtroom in Guantanamo Bay is highly secured, with reporters sequestered in another room. And no cameras are allowed — but thanks to one woman, we can get an idea of what the scene looks like.
