Allen Reggie arrested for carrying two loaded guns into NYC subway station

A man has been arrested for carrying two loaded guns into a New York City subway station Sunday night. 

Police arrested 33-year-old Allen Reggie of Columbia, South Carolina, after an officer saw him try to go through a Manhattan subway turnstile without paying, NBC News reported. The police officer then noticed Reggie had a handgun tucked into his waistband.

Reggie was carrying two weapons: a Smith & Wesson .45-caliber handgun and an Intratec Luger Tec-9 machine gun, which was in a bag. Both were loaded. 

He has been charged with criminal possession of a machine gun, criminal possession of a loaded firearm, and other charges, NBC News reported. 

Crime in New York's subways has increased 16.6 percent in 2011 from 2010, according to the NYPD. However, felony assaults were down 6.9 percent since this time last year, according to NBC News.

The NYPD Transit Bureau head count is down nearly 10% this year compared with 2010, New York Daily News reported.

“These statistics are really troubling,” Transit Bureau board member Andrew Albert told the Daily News. “We have to stop this at the turnstile.”

New York's crime rates are still nowhere near the levels of the 1980s, when violence was so common that New Yorkers avoided using the subways.
