The early morning fog begins to subside around the mountains that surround the town of Chaiten, in the southern Chilean Patagonia region. In May 2008, the Chaiten volcano, located six miles outside of the town, erupted by surprise after laying dormant for more than 9,000 years. (Francisco Negroni)
