Want to save on car insurance?

Car owners can feel the effects of police policy in their pocketbooks, according to a report by the newspaper O Globo. A survey shows that car insurance rates fell by an average of 15.7 percent in the city of Rio de Janeiro over the course of last year. Some neighborhoods saw drops of as much as 37 percent. Experts credit the police takeover of several favelas, along with a law that prohibits driving after even one drink. The zero-tolerance law has apparently reduced the number of accidents. In addition, increased security in favelas is credited for a 27 percent drop in car theft this January as compared with the beginning of 2010.
