Protestors block Brazil port project
A Brazilian construction site that’s set to become the world’s third-largest port was shut down this morning by angry protesters, the newspaper O Globo reports. Protestors said developers of the Acu Port project—which is backed by Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista—expropriated land at random for the project and, in many cases, have so far failed to pay for it. The protestors, many of them former landowners, have blocked roads leading to the construction site, which is in the town of São João da Barra, about 200 miles from the city of Rio de Janeiro. The $787 million facility is expected to open in the second half of 2012.
