Just after dawn yesterday, nearly 1,000 civilian and military police, backed by a dozen armored personnel carriers, moved into nine favelas in central Rio de Janeiro yesterday in an operation police said involved no shots fired. Until Sunday these slums had been under the control of several drug gangs. Last week reports of the coming raid were widespread, and residents told reporters the traffickers fled in advance of police.
