China may be on a mission to make its citizens happy, but recent reports about just how unhappy they currently are have been scrubbed from official media (this link to the original China Daily story is now dead).

According to the China Digital Times, a Berkeley-based website that keeps a running tab on the orders given to Chinese media under the header “Directives from the Ministry of Truth,” websites have been directed to remove stories about a poll that showed only 6 percent of Chinese consider themselves happy. The survey seemed to indicate that making the people happy might take more than just a five-year plan, although financial success was cited as a key concern.
