Iran says it shot down spy drones
Iran is claiming that its elite Revolutionary Guards shot down two "Western spy drones" in the Gulf, a senior Iranian commander has been quoted as saying.
The semi-official Fars news agency quoted the head of the Revolutionary Guards' air force wing, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, as saying "many" other drones have been shot down over an unspecified period of time.
The drones were mainly being used in Iraq and Afghanistan but "some violations against our soil" had also occurred, the commander said.
He said that Iran had shot down many foreign planes without revealing it to the media.
In January 2007, an Iranian lawmaker told Fars that Iranian military troops had shot down a U.S. spy plane.
"Americans send such spy drones to the region every now and then," Seyed Nezam Mola Hoveizeh said.
