Maqbool Fida Husain, known as the Picasso of India for his bold, modernist paintings, passed away in London, reports the Indian Express.

One of the leading figures among the artists known as the Progressive Group, Husain left India for self-imposed exile in 2006, following a series of legal cases and death threats related to his paintings of Hindu goddesses in the nude.

He accepted Qatari citizenship in 2010 after surrendering his Indian passport and till the last was reticent on whether he would return to his homeland.

According to the paper, Husain died at 2.30 am local time at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, where had been a patient for the past one and a half months. He was 95 years old.
