HAITIANS SEEK REFUGE IN BRAZIL
By plane, boat, bus and on foot, some 160 Haitian immigrants have made their way to Brazil, according to Globo News. They spent some two months on a journey that took them from Haiti to the Dominican Republic, through Panama and Ecuador, finally arriving in northern Peru and crossing the border into one of Brazil’s most remote states, Acre. (How remote? As in: Amazon jungle / indigenous tribe / lost city remote). The Brazilian government is providing food and shelter while the immigrants wait for permission to stay and work in the country. Most aim to leave Acre. Some hope to work in other Amazonian states or in the country’s economic capital, Sao Paulo. Others are looking to make it to the US or Mexico.
