A shootout erupted during what police said was an operation to crack down on drug trafficking in several slums in Rio’s rough north zone. According to news reports, city mayor Eduardo Paes was in a nearby city building when gunshots hit five windows on three floors. A helicopter for Globo news was hit three times as it tried to film the operation. It was forced to make an emergency landing at a nearby airstrip. Officials say no one with the government or OGlobo was injured. There’s no word yet on the fate of residents or drug traffickers in the neighborhoods where the shootout took place.
