GlobalPost's ground-breaking "On Location" video series has won the prestigious 2011 Edward R. Murrow Award.
The award, which honors excellence in electronic journalism, has been given annually by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) since 1971.
Boston-based GlobalPost accepts this honor well into its third year as a prime player in global media.
“We are thrilled to be honored with the Murrow award,” said GlobalPost Editor Thomas Mucha. “On Location employs the highest standards of video production to deliver great journalism with authenticity and grit.
"To be recognized for our work alongside some of the biggest names in news is humbling,” Mucha said.
GlobalPost’s won in the Online News Operation – National category for Video News series. Other winners in the category included The Associated Press, Reuters, and Yahoo.
GlobalPost’s On Location series transports viewers to far-flung corners of the globe, where seasoned correspondents ferret out extraordinary characters to tell compelling stories.
On Location tackles the biggest and most consequential stories around the world, putting a fresh frame around the war in Afghanistan, the Arab Spring, the ongoing conflict in the DRC, environmental degradation in the Amazon and Java, bunga bunga parties in Rome and many others.
But don't take our word for it.

Here's a particularly provocative piece from Kunar, Afghanistan, by James Foley, back in August 2010. In it, he captures an ambush on American soldiers, during which a private gets struck in the helmet with live fire.
In another noteworthy On Location video from Ishunga, Congo, U.N. troops are escorting people in eastern Congo to the market each week so that they can shop without fear of attack by rebels.
