China chides Google
China has, unsurprisingly, denied claims by Internet giant Google that the authoritarian state is messing with Gmail services. In remarks at a regular Foreign Ministry news conference on Tuesday, spokeswoman Jiang Yu refuted the allegations made by Google on Sunday.
"This is an unacceptable accusation," ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular news conference on Tuesday, the BBC reported.
Google has said its Gmail platform in China appears to have been deliberately targeted, leaving users with error messages and non-functioning email. In addition, the accounts of several users in China, including activists and foreign journalists, have been hacked in recent weeks as China ratchets up its information controls following online calls last month for anti-government uprisings.
China has repeatedly denied increasing accusations in recent years that is has targeted specific groups for hacking or malware attacks.
