We're not sure. But what we do know is that sensational acts have become one of the best ways for activists to garner the attention of media organizations.

What began this trend? 

There is plenty of blame to go around. It could be an increasing pressure of a hyperbolic media atmosphere. Or it could be protest movements going to new lengths to project their respective messages. Whether it is protesters or the coverage, the crazy costumes and the crazy acts are only getting more so.
