An Australian teenage girl has reportedly been freed after 10 hours shackled to a collar bomb in the home of her wealthy family.
Bomb experts were able to free Madeleine Pulver, 18, from the collar bomb after getting expert advice from the Australian Federal Police bomb center and the British military, the Telegraph reports
She had reportedly been attacked in her home in Mosman, a neighborhood of multimillion-dollar properties, by a man in a balaclava as she studied for her exams about 2.30 p.m. local time.
Pulver is reportedly in her final year at the prestigious Wenona School in North Sydney.
"She is in good hands, with mum and dad," New South Wales Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch said at the scene, the ABC reports. "We still don’t know if the device was explosive. It was a very elaborate device. It has taken our experts 10 hours to come to grips with it.”
The 18-year-old girl “has disclosed a lot of information to our police, which we can now act on,” he said.
"She's been kept in a very uncomfortable position," Murdoch said. "She has been and will be uncomfortable for a little while to come."
Madeleine's parents William and Belinda Pulver — one of Sydney's wealthiest families — were reportedly "immensely relieved" and that the girl was safe.
The terrified teenager had called police Wednesday to tell them she had been attached to a bomb, amid reports of an extortion bid targeting her wealthy family.
She was unable to remove herself from the device as police cordoned off the neighborhood in the beach side suburb of Mosman, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. The Daily Telegraph ran a photo of the luxury house.
Fire crews and paramedics were on standby as the drama unfolded, and neighboring houses were evacuated.
Reports said a ransom note had been attached to Pulver's neck.
