Sugarland stage collapse kills five at Indiana fair

Five people were killed and dozens were injured late Saturday when a stage collapsed in high winds at the Indiana State Fair as fans waited for country band Sugarland to play.

"The wind just picked up and the stage just caught and the roof just caught and it went up like a sail and then it crashed forward into the people standing in the front," said a WANE-TV reporter who witnessed the incident, according to TMZ.

"There were people trapped underneath and everyone was running and screaming. They were asking any medics or nurses not to leave."

A post on Sugarland's Twitter account said: "We are all right. We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need your strength."

CMT website said singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles had completed her set and around 15,000 fans were waiting for Sugarland to take the stage when organizers warned the crowd to leave the area due to approaching high winds.

Other country music stars also expressed their condolences, according to Hollywood reporter.

"So sad to hear about the lives lost and those injured at the Sugarland concert in Indianapolis. Our prayers go out to their families," wrote Steel Magnolia on Twitter.

Martina McBride wrote: "So sad to hear about the State Fair in Indianapolis. Our prayers are with Sugarland, their fans, and all the personnel working there."

Keith Urban said he was "absolutely in shock" while Kelly Clarkson said video of the incident was "maybe one of scariest things I've ever seen."
