Halloween in New Orleans: 16 shot, 2 dead

On Halloween night in New Orleans, 16 people were shot and two died from their wounds, Reuters reports.
The first death occurred around midnight when two men started firing at each other on Bourbon street in the French Quarter. Eight people were hit, including 25-year-old Albert Glover, who later died at the hospital of multiple gunshot wounds, CBS News reports.
Around 2 a.m., two men and two women were shot at the corner of Canal Street and University Place, on the edge of the French Quarter, and 19-year-old victim Joshua Lewis died, CBS News reports.
Police saw three people fleeing the scene, The Associated Press reports. They caught and arrested 24-year-old Baltiman Malcom and have booked him with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, Officer Hilal Williams of the New Orleans Police Department told Reuters.
Police responded to three more shootings overnight in residential areas a few miles to the east of the French Quarter, Reuters reports. On Monday evening a man was wounded in the leg; around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, a man was shot in both legs; and at 5:30 a.m., two people were shot in the head or neck.

Gun violence has soared in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mayor Mitch Landrieu held a summit in September to ask the public to help bring it under control. Landrieu has pointed out that New Orleans’ per capita murder rate is much higher than comparable cities.
