Venezuela’s Chavez “doing well” after more radiation therapy in Cuba

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has returned home after a third round of radiotherapy in Cuba, insisting that he is "doing well".

CNN says that Chavez delivered an address from the Miraflores presidential palace, during which he said he was "advancing with great faith, recovering and recovering."

His return came as Venezuela marked the anniversary of the 2002 coup that briefly ousted him from power, BBC explains, adding that Chavez was taken straight to the presidential palace to discuss the coup with his political allies.

Associated Press describes how hundreds of Chavez's supporters celebrated by marching through downtown Caracas, chanting pro-government slogans and Venezuelan flags.

Chavez began radiation treatment in late March after having a tumor removed and is due to have two more rounds, according to AFP.  Officials in Caracas have never specified the type of cancer the president has or exactly where it is, but insist it has not spread to other organs.

Chavez is due to attend the Summit of the Americas in Colombia this week, Bloomberg reports.  However, Venezuela's Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro has indicated that his appearance will depend on his health, adding: “Right now the president is dedicated to his treatment and recovery with a lot of energy and dedication.”
