Typhoon Vicente lashes Hong Kong

Hong Kong was hit by a typhoon overnight, which injured more than 100 people and damaged trees and power lines, Agence France Presse reported.
Many flights were canceled or delayed when authorities sounded the alarm before Typhoon Vicente struck, shortly after midnight, packing winds of 87 miles per hour.

Hong Kong’s port was closed, and ferry, bus and train services were severely disrupted.
Trees were ripped from the ground and debris was sent flying around city streets on Monday evening as commuters traveled home from work, AFP reported.
Ahead of the storm, which brought with it massive downpours, Hong Kong authorities issued their first hurricane warning since 1999 – but the threat was later downgraded.

Officials said more than 100 people were treated in hospital, the BBC reported, adding that trading on Hong Kong’s stock exchange was temporarily delayed.
The storm moved west, away from Hong Kong, and weakened over the southern Chinese coast, but flight disruptions were expected to continue.
