Tunisia names top coalition posts

Tunisia's coalition has announced who will take on the government’s top posts, with Islamist Hamadi Jebali, from the Ennahda party named as Prime Minister.

In a deal between Tunisia’s three main parties, the post of president will go to opposition politician Moncef Marzouki, from the Congress for the Republic party, the BBC reported.

Mustafa Ben Jaafar, from the third member of the coalition, Ettakatol, is to become the speaker of the constitutional assembly.

News of the deal had been reported across various news sites days ahead of the announcement, and attributed to government sources.

The Islamist Ennahda party won the largest share of the vote in October's historic democratic elections poll, which were held nine months after the toppling of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Agence France Presse reported.

Ennahda took 89 seats, while the Congress for the Republic took 29 seats, and center-right party Ettakatol won 21 seats.

The caretaker government is tasked with overseeing Tunisia until a general election is held, once the 217-strong constituent assembly drafts a new constitution.

The assembly is to hold its first meeting later on Tuesday.
