Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat has been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack, medical officials said Tuesday.

The 57-year-old, who has participated in negotiations with Israel over peace and Palestinian statehood for more than two decades, is in a stable condition at a hospital in the West Bank city of Ramallah after undergoing surgery for a clot in an artery, according to the BBC.

Erekat is to remain in hospital for three days for supervision, the Associated Press reports.

His wife, Naama, told the Agence France Presse that Erekat “woke at dawn with chest pains… it turned out he had suffered a heart attack, so [doctors] performed an emergency catheterization at hospital, which was successful.”
