Teen lesbian couple found with gunshot wounds to the head in Texas park

Park visitors in Portland, Texas found two teenaged girl lying in the grass with gunshot wounds to the head, MSNBC reported. The women, Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, and Mary Christine Chapa, 18, were believed to be seriously dating. Police say it's too early to determine if the shooting was a hate crime.

Olgin has died, while Chapa remains in stable condition after being rushed to the hospital on Sunday, KRISTV reported.

“She is able to communicate,” Police Chief Randy Wright told the Corpus Christi Caller Times. “But we have not yet been able to talk with her.”

Locals say that the area by the park is usually a quiet and safe neighborhood. Friends told KRISTV that the girls had been dating for five months and that they didn't know of anyone who would want to hurt the couple. While it's too early to tell if their sexuality played a role in the crime, the police did say it's possible that the girls could have been targeted.  “It appears as if … this was not just a random attack but that’s something that we really have to develop over time," Wright told MSNBC.
