Syria: police, civilians killed in twin Damascus ‘terrorist’ blasts

Twin bombings in the Syrian capital Damascus early today killed an unknown number of police and civilians, Agence France Presse reported.

Syrian state television said “terrorists” had blown up vehicles packed with explosives in an attack targeting the criminal police headquarters and an office of Syria's intelligence services.
Images of bodies and burned-out vehicles were broadcast, while residents said smoke could be seen rising from the areas where the blasts hit, Reuters reported.
The incident comes after UN and Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, called for a team of UN experts to be sent to Damascus to discuss an international monitoring mission.
Speaking after a closed briefing of the UN Security Council, Annan said the conflict in Syria risked spreading to the rest of the Middle East, the BBC reported.

He urged members of the UN Security Council to put aside their divisions and respond to the crisis.
